As COO and Co-Founder of 3SC, and Chairperson of the Women in Logistics Leadership (WLL) vertical at CII Institute of Logistics, I've spent over a decade breaking barriers in supply chain and logistics industry. Despite rising diversity awareness, it remains a male-dominated industry globally. Women represent only about 40% of the total supply chain workforce, a figure stagnant in recent years per Gartner's 2024 Women in Supply Chain Survey.

Supply chain and logistics isn't just about moving goods. It's the backbone of our economy, powering everything from e-commerce booms to resilient manufacturing.

Yet women remain strikingly underrepresented here. At our recent WLL chapter meeting, I witnessed firsthand the power of diverse voices: first-generation founders, career starters in their forties, and trailblazers who stumbled into supply chain by choice and grit. These stories fuel my conviction. It's time for more women to lead this transformation.

The Stark Reality: Women Are the Missing Link in Supply Chains

The global logistics industry is expanding at an unprecedented pace, projected to cross $15 trillion by 2029. It is one of the most critical engines of global commerce, influencing everything from economic stability to customer experience.

Despite this growth, leadership representation has not kept pace with industry growth.

While women make up a significant share of the professional workforce, they hold only about 26–28% of senior leadership and C-suite roles in the sector (source Gartner). The gap becomes even more visible at the highest decision-making levels.

This is not just a statistic representation; it is a structural imbalance.

The World Bank estimates that closing the global gender gap could unlock up to $15 trillion in additional GDP . When applied to supply chain industries built on agility, resilience, collaboration, and foresight, the implications are even more significant. An imbalance in leadership does not simply create inequality; it limits perspective, slows innovation, and narrows strategic thinking.

Think about what makes supply chains successful:

  • Cross-functional collaboration
  • Risk anticipation and crisis response
  • Long-term systems thinking
  • Sustainable innovation

These are not gendered capabilities, but research consistently shows that diverse teams perform better, with studies indicating that inclusive organizations can outperform peers by as much as 39% in profitability.

And yet, for decades, logistics has been positioned culturally and structurally as a “man’s domain.”

My firsthand experience, as a woman co-founder building a tech enabled supply chain solutions company in its early stages, I often found myself in rooms where I am the only woman in the room. The challenge isn’t capability, It is the perception.

Real Challenges: Infrastructure and Retention Roadblocks

Women in logistics face systemic hurdles that demand urgent fixes. Warehouses often lack functional washrooms or hygiene facilities, ignoring basic needs like menstrual cycles. Research consistently shows that women, particularly mothers face higher attrition rates due to rigid workplace structures, caregiving burdens, and lack of flexibility, as engagement suffers without flexible policies or support.

These aren't just inconveniences. They stifle talent. At WLL meetings, leaders shared stories of quitting promising roles due to these gaps. Addressing them, through women-friendly infrastructure, parental leave, and hybrid models, is smart economics.

Why More Women Matter: Unlocking Resilience and Innovation

Diversity isn't a buzzword. It's a business imperative. It fortifies supply chains against disruptions like COVID-19, emphasizing holistic risk management, stakeholder empathy, and sustainability. At our WLL meeting, one founder shared how her intuitive demand sensing saved her firm during lockdowns. Another, entering the field at 40, is now founder of a successful shipping business. These aren't exceptions, these are proof of women enhance decision-making. Here's why more women are essential:

  • Better Decisions Through Diverse Leadership: Supply chains are strategic nerve centers demanding balanced judgment, risk anticipation, and cross-functional alignment. Diverse teams consistently deliver broader perspectives and stronger outcomes.
  • Solving the Talent Shortage: Logistics faces a growing talent gap. We can't overlook half the talent pool. Encouraging women to see supply chain as aspirational is key to sustainable growth.
  • Driving Innovation in a Digital Era: As AI, analytics, and automation digitize supply chains, leadership must evolve. Collaboration, empathy, and systems thinking, amplified in diverse teams, are critical.
  • Building an Inclusive Industry Culture: An industry that moves the world must reflect it. Gender equality isn't an HR metric. It's foundational to a credible, future-ready ecosystem.

More women mean stronger talent pipelines. The workforce across the globe is evolving, with over 48% female demographics. Women excel across retail, finance, healthcare, and education. So why does logistics stay behind? It's time to catch up.

WLL: Building Pathways to Leadership

That's why WLL exists. Our vision is to transform opportunities for women in logistics and supply chain, propelling them into larger leadership roles. Our mission? Provide education, mentorship, and career opportunities across the value chain. This empowers women toward professional excellence.
